An inspiring life of the saints
Saint Francis and the Gift of Creation
Francis learned that the world is God’s gift—and that gratitude should make our hearts gentle and generous.

Francis grew up in the Italian town of Assisi. His family was wealthy, and as a young man he dreamed of excitement, fine clothes, and becoming admired. But God slowly changed what Francis wanted most.
A different kind of treasure
After illness, disappointment, and much prayer, Francis began noticing people he had once avoided—especially those who were poor or sick. He discovered that serving them brought him closer to Jesus.
Francis gave up his comfortable life and chose simplicity. He repaired small churches, cared for people in need, preached peace, and invited others to follow the Gospel with joy.
Brother sun and sister moon
Francis did not worship nature. He worshiped God, the Creator. Because everything came from God, Francis spoke about creation as one great family. His famous Canticle of the Creatures praises God through “Brother Sun,” “Sister Moon,” wind, water, fire, and earth.
That grateful way of seeing changed how Francis lived. A gift should not be wasted or treated carelessly. A world made by God should lead us to praise, humility, and care—especially for people who suffer.
A peacemaker with a joyful heart
Francis wanted peace to begin in his own heart. He taught his brothers to serve without seeking praise and to bring kindness wherever there was anger or sadness.
Stories about Francis and animals help children remember his gentleness. The deepest lesson is even bigger: when we know God is our loving Father, we can treat people, animals, and the earth with gratitude rather than selfishness.
Your gift of creation today
You can follow Francis by thanking God for one beautiful thing, using only what you need, caring for an animal, picking up litter, sharing with someone who has less, or choosing peaceful words during an argument.
Small acts of care become prayers when they are offered to God with love.
Pray with Saint Francis
A prayer of gratitude
God our Creator, thank you for the world you made and for every person you love. Give me a grateful heart. Help me care for your gifts, share with those in need, and bring your peace wherever I go. Saint Francis, pray for me. Amen.
Try this together
Take a short “gratitude walk.” Each person chooses one part of creation to notice and thanks God for it aloud.
For grown-ups: this story draws on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and his Canticle of the Creatures. It emphasizes the Catholic distinction between loving creation as God’s gift and worshiping God alone.
